From thoughtful design to a living landscape.

A successful native garden begins with more than choosing the right plants. How a site is prepared, how plants are arranged, how densely they are installed, and how the landscape is cared for during establishment all shape what that garden will become.

Root Down Terrains provides professional native plant installation throughout Chester County, Delaware County, and the surrounding Delaware Valley, transforming traditional and underused landscapes into diverse, layered plant communities designed to grow more beautiful with time.

Our installations are guided by horticulture and ecology from the ground up. We match plants to the conditions of the site, arrange them according to both their ecological relationships and visual character, and install them with the long-term development of the garden in mind.

Our goal is to establish resilient, diverse plant communities that provide meaningful habitat while creating a beautiful and dynamic landscape.

More Than a Collection of Native Plants

Native plants are increasingly available at nurseries and garden centers, but simply placing native species throughout a landscape doesn't necessarily create a successful native garden.

We think in terms of plant communities.

Rather than relying on widely spaced individual plants surrounded by large areas of mulch, our installations often use layers of grasses, sedges, flowering perennials, shrubs, and trees to occupy the landscape more completely.

Plants are selected and positioned according to their mature size, growth habit, seasonal role, site preferences, and relationships with the plants around them.

The result is a landscape that feels cohesive and intentional while providing the density and diversity that make plant-driven landscapes so dynamic.

The Right Plant in the Right Place

Every property contains its own set of growing conditions.

Sunlight, soil, drainage, moisture, slope, existing vegetation, deer pressure, surrounding trees, buildings, and even subtle differences across a single garden can determine whether a plant thrives or struggles.

We work with those conditions rather than against them.

A sunny, dry garden might become a tapestry of flowering perennials and warm-season grasses. A shaded property may draw inspiration from the layered vegetation of our eastern woodlands. Areas that periodically collect water can become opportunities for moisture-loving plants and stormwater management.

By choosing plants suited to the landscape already present, we can create gardens that are both beautiful and better equipped to establish successfully.

Site Preparation Comes First

Some of the most important work happens before the first plant ever enters the ground.

Existing lawn, invasive plants, persistent weeds, excessive mulch, compacted soil, or unsuitable vegetation can all interfere with the establishment of a new garden. Depending on the property, Root Down Terrains can prepare the planting area before installation so the new landscape begins with a strong foundation.

Preparation may include removing existing vegetation, managing invasive species, reducing or eliminating lawn, addressing excessive mulch, making appropriate soil improvements, and preparing the planting surface for installation.

We don't approach every property with the same preparation method. The strategy is selected according to the existing conditions and what the future garden requires.

Planting for a Landscape That Will Mature

A native planting looks very different on installation day than it will several years later.

We design and install with that future landscape in mind.

Young plants are positioned according to their eventual size and behavior, while planting density is used strategically to encourage the garden to knit together as it develops. Over time, plants expand, intermingle, flower, set seed, and begin occupying the spaces that might otherwise be filled by weeds or mulch.

This process creates the layered, abundant character that defines many of our landscapes.

We aren't planting for the photograph taken on day one. We're planting for the garden that will exist in years three, five, and beyond.

Why Native Plants?

The landscapes surrounding our homes, businesses, and communities are part of a much larger ecological system.

Native plants have evolved alongside the insects and wildlife of our region and can provide food, shelter, nesting resources, and other ecological relationships that many conventional ornamental landscapes provide only in limited ways.

Bringing native vegetation back into developed landscapes creates opportunities for those relationships to return as well.

A single garden may seem small, but collectively our yards, schools, businesses, parks, and community spaces represent an enormous amount of land. Each thoughtfully planted property can become another piece of a more connected living landscape.

And those ecological benefits can coexist with exceptional garden design.

What We Plant

Our native plant installations can range from individual garden beds to larger landscape transformations and may incorporate native flowering perennials, ornamental grasses, sedges, ferns, groundcovers, shrubs, and trees.

Depending on the property, we can create pollinator gardens, woodland and shade gardens, foundation plantings, naturalistic perennial gardens, lawn conversions, rain gardens, habitat plantings, and restorations of previously degraded or overgrown areas.

Plant palettes are developed around the conditions and goals of each property rather than relying on a standard collection of species.

Installation Is Only the Beginning

Native landscapes are often described as low maintenance, but they are not no maintenance, particularly during establishment.

The first seasons are an important period as young plants develop roots, begin filling their intended spaces, and respond to the conditions of the property.

Our ecological stewardship services can help guide the landscape through this transition. Rather than maintaining a garden in a permanently static condition, stewardship focuses on helping the planting develop successfully: managing weeds, monitoring plant performance, making adjustments when necessary, and allowing the landscape to mature while preserving the intent of the original design.

Over time, the goal is not simply to maintain what was planted, it is to help the garden become what it was designed to be.

Root Down Terrains includes 12-months of stewardship post-installation to expertly guide your new landscape through its first year.
